Anna was five years old and about to start Kindergarten when she was hospitalized. She loved singing, drawing and being with her friends. She was diagnosed with a high-risk neuroblastoma. The following year included a battery of treatments to battle the disease, radiation, chemotherapy and more. Throughout, her smile remained. When it became clear that her cancer was terminal, all her parents could do was make Anna's final days comfortable. They accessed resources made available to them through hospice care – specifically Friends of Hospice Southwest Washington.
One of our volunteers met with Anna and her family to share what programs we offer and determine how we could best be of service. Anna was asked what she would like to make her days happier. Her unusual answer puzzled our volunteer. She was adamant, insistent even, that she wanted “a little red wagon.” Puzzled, our volunteer asked Anna “Why the wagon was so important?” She silently shrugged her little shoulders and simply stated “I need a red wagon so I can take my toys to heaven.”
Friends of Hospice Southwest Washington not only purchased that little red wagon, they filled it to overflowing with stuffies and toys for Anna.
Several weeks later, Anna quietly slipped away with her family by her side. Although Anna lost her battle with cancer, we know she is playing with her toys and little red wagon in heaven! Can you just picture it? Sweet Anna pulling around her wagon of beloved toys. Giggling and smiling as she plays with all her friends, Sally the baby doll and Theo the teddy bear.
This is just one example of how Friends of Hospice Southwest Washington helps children and families in their times of need. Won’t you help us help children like Anna find joy?
